What is Period Skin?
Joshua Zeichner, M.D., dermatologist and director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC, explains this familiar and highly relatable concern (at least for those of us who have a uterus and have crossed the puberty mark. He says,
“Women often break out because of hormonal fluctuations. It typically occurs in the lower third of the face, like the jawline and around the mouth.”
According to Dr. Zeichner, the inflammation and blemishes that are characteristic of period skin are due to hormones which tend to be off balance before your period arrives.
Solutions for Period Skin
Given that this phenomenon occurs regularly, there are a number of skin care solutions that may help. One of these tried and tested solutions is taking birth control medication, since a number of these meds are designed to regulate hormones.
Another solution is to create a period skin routine. Dr. Zeichner suggests using a cleanser that contains salicylic acid and then applying an acne treatment with benzoyl peroxide to your entire face at night. He shares,
“Step up your acne regimen in the two weeks leading up to your period. Rather than treating a pimple after it develops, it’s best to prevent it from happening.”
However, if your period skin problems are frequent and painful, a visit to your doctor is highly recommended. This ensures that the possibility of polycystic ovarian syndrome, a serious hormonal imbalance, is eliminated.
