GOT’s Mother of Dragons Emilia Clarke on Nudity and Feminism
Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys on Game of Thrones, shares her thoughts about some pressing issues concerning women celebrities. In an interview with Rolling Stone, we learn the empowering views our favorite Khaleesi has on nudity and feminism, among others.
On Being Female in a Male Dominated World
The actress who recently turned 30 shares her views on being one of the few women in the film industry and how differently actresses are treated in comparison to their male counterparts.
“I feel so naive for saying it, but it’s like dealing with racism. You’re aware of it, and you’re aware of it, but one day, you go, ‘Oh, my God, it’s everywhere!’ Like you suddenly wake up to it and you go, ‘Wait a f*ing second, are you . . . are you treating me different because I’ve got a pair of tits? Is that actually happening?’ It took me a really long time to see that I do get treated differently. But I look around, and that’s my daily life.”
On Nudity and Feminism
Clarke shares that though she’s been naked on screen, these instances do not mean that she’s not a feminist or that she is less the amazing woman that she is. The beauty, who was recognized as Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive in 2015, tells Rolling Stone,
“It doesn’t stop me from being a feminist. Like, guess what? Yes, I’ve got mascara on, and I also have a high IQ, so those two things can be one and the same.”
The character development of Daenerys is also one that the actress takes pride in, noting how important it is in this day and age to see a woman in power. She says,
“Women have been great rulers. And then for that to be a character that I’m known to play? That’s so f*ing lucky. Anyone who seems to think that it’s not needed need only look at the political environment we’re all living in to be like, ‘Oh, no, it’s needed. It is needed.’”
On Being an Empowered Woman
Clarke credits her mother for her empowered upbringing, citing how she learned by example that women are capable of so much.
“…I’m a fucking woman, and there aren’t very many of us performing in the environment that I’m performing in. I need to be incredibly sure of the ground on which I’m standing, and I need to take ownership of the choices I’m making.’”
