Rei Kawakubo and the Comme des Garçons
The theme for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2017 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala 2017 is “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons.” The show, which opened on May 4, is the first monograph show at the museum to focus on a living designer since 1983, when they featured Yves Saint Laurent.
“Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.” (Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute’s curator-in-charge)

Visit The #CostumeInstitute spring 2017 exhibition “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” examining Rei Kawakubo’s fascination with interstitiality, or the space between boundaries. Not a traditional retrospective, this thematic exhibition is The @metcostumeinstitute ’s first monographic show on a living designer since the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition in 1983. #MetKawakubo #TheMet #ReiKawakubo #Regram @metmuseum
In honor of the Rei Kawakubo and the Comme des Garçons (CDG) exhibit on display at the Met Museum in New York, the Met Store is offering a line of merchandise that the designer has co-created herself. And, what makes these items more attractive is that they are not as pricey as the brand’s usual price point, which is typically out of reach.
“What I’ve only ever been interested in are clothes that one has never seen before, that are completely new, and how in what way they can be expressed. Is that called fashion? I don’t know the answer.” (Rei Kawakubo)
The Comme des Garçons Merchandise
The collection features a number of items with CDG’s signature polka dot print. The “Wear Your Freedom” t-shirt was designed exclusively for The Met by Comme des Garçons, in celebration of the spring 2017 Costume Institute exhibition dubbed “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.” The exhibit will be available for viewing through September 4 at The Met Fifth Avenue.
Tote bags, wallets, a pair of Nikes designed in collaboration with CDG, and enamel pins, are available for your shopping pleasures. You can check out the recently opened The Met x CDG Pocket Shop in NYC or browse through the Comme des Garçons merchandise online.
