3. Writers’ Museum

Housed in Lady Stair’s House on the Royal Mile, this unique museum is worth a visit. The house is included in the list of Historic Scotland buildings. The museum focuses on Scotland’s greatest literary talents, namely Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Portraits, personal artifacts, manuscripts and first editions by these prominent writers are on display at the Writers’ Museum. The printing press used to produce Scott’s Waverley Novels is one of the highlights of this museum tour.

Makar’s Court is located next to the museum. The courtyard is dubbed as a monument to literature noting the engravings on its floor, which are literary quotes from 12 of Scotland’s greatest writers and written in Gaelic, Scots, Latin, and English.

4. Gladstone’s Land

Gladstone’s Land is a must see for visitors in Edinburgh so they can get an insight into the cramped conditions of the Old Town. Then, for a contrasting experience, visit The Georgian House in the New Town.

5. Camera Obscura and World of Illusion

Formerly called the Outlook Tower and Camera Obscura, the Camera Obscura and World of Illusion has five floors worth of attractions that are related to optical illusions and an observation deck. This is the oldest purpose built attraction in Edinburgh.

The original Camera Obscura at this attraction takes the form of an entire room where images are projected through a giant periscope. The interactive hands-on exhibits include a Magic Gallery, a Light Fantastic exhibit, and the Fun, Games and Stairway section that shows optical illusions used in art. Visitors should also check out the Electric Room, the Moving Pictures Room and Mirrors, and the Light and Lenses Room.

The World of Illusion is located on Castle Hill, next to Edinburgh Castle.

6. Edinburgh Castle

One of the reasons why Edinburgh is on every travel bucket list is the grand Edinburgh Castle. Indeed, this infrastructure is possibly Scotland’s most recognizable historic landmark that has become an intricate part of the nation’s identity. A visit to the castle is a great way to experience Edinburgh’s unique culture.

7. Scotch Whisky Experience

Probably the most popular reason why Edinburgh is on every travel bucket list is the Scotch whisky experience. Scotland is famous for its whisky and the Scotch Whisky Experience is an interesting adventure that even non-alcoholic visitors can enjoy. Among its featured amenities are a 10-minute “barrel ride” through a distillery and whisky tasting at the world’s largest collection of Scotch Whiskies.

Need any more reasons why Edinburgh is on every travel bucket list? We bet not.
