Prepare to Be Amazed by the San Diego Splash
Can you imagine a team of senior women playing in a basketball league? Prepare to be amazed by the San Diego Splash, a basketball team composed of women over 80 years old. Nine women are on the senior women’s team’s roster with majority of them born in the 1920s and 1930s.
Coach Kira always says she does burpees so that when she is 90, she can pop back up and give herself a big high-five. It's training for life. The women of the San Diego Splash prove just how important to your body and your spirit staying active is. Check out their video on our FB page. Well done ladies, you inspire our Kaia family! 🏀⛹🏽♀️kaiafitssc #kaiafitsacramento #sandiegosplash
The San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association is comprised of more than 140 women 50 and older, 24 of them are 70 or older. The Splash is the oldest team under the Association. The team has two titles at the National Senior Games. The team plays three-on-three in 30-minute half-court games.
Wow, how's this for some inspiration. These women who are all over 80 years old (their particular team requires you to be 80 and up. Some of their players are even in their 90s) play in a 3 on 3 league in San Diego. The league is for senior women 50 and up. But wait, they're not just doing it as an exercise, they said they play to win! 👀 and they aren't lying. Click the link in my bio and check them out! #SanDiegoSplash
The San Diego Splash Members
Majority of the players on the Splash have been shooting hoops for several decades now, both as players in the San Diego Senior Women’s Basketball Association and in other leagues. The 90-year-old Meg Skinner has been playing basketball for 24 years and counts two broken wrists and four busted fingers among her battle scars. Fran Styles, 87, has been on the basketball court for two years now.
However, the 91-year-old Grace Larson has only been playing the sport recently.
“I was 78 when I got my first basketball shoes, so that was a thrill. Growing up, we didn’t have sports like the girls do today. We didn’t have the opportunity to play — that was before Title IX. I thought, oh gee that would be so much fun if I could actually play basketball. As long as I can, I’m gonna play.” (Grace Larson)
The San Diego Splash women’s basketball team welcomes anyone who is at least 80 years old. According to 87-year-old Marge Carl, the team is open to any senior woman who is interested in playing basketball.
“If you can stand up and move your legs, you’re welcome.”
