Smile of the Week – Amy Poehler Is More Than Just a Funny Girl
American comedian, actress, director, producer, and writer Amy Poehler is best known for her humor and wit. But what makes her an influential personality is her capacity to use her talents and influence for the betterment of humanity.
“Being silly is how you get your power. No one looks stupid when they’re having fun.” (Amy Poehler)
Check out more reasons why Amy Poehler is Smile of the Week:
Poehler was one of the founding members of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 1999, along with Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh. The UCB Theatre Training Center is one of the largest and most respected improvisational theatre and training centers in the country.
“One of our primary goals at the UCB Theatre is to identify comedy performers and writers with talent and drive and provide them with opportunities to develop their voice. UCBT is more than just a stage: it is a comedy collective where dedicated individuals form collaborative creative relationships that can last a lifetime.”
The actress is the first woman to become a full cast member of the Saturday Night Live in her first season. This has earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on SNL.
“Amy is fearless in front of the camera. Her confidence draws the audience in, and soon they’re laughing their asses off.” (Kristen Wiig)
She also stars as Leslie Knope on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, for which she has been nominated for three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, two Golden Globe Awards, and one Screen Actors Guild Award.
A renowned humanitarian, Poehler is active in women’s issues and serves as Ambassador for the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. Her dedication to empowering and helping women and girls has gained her numerous compliments, including Glamour’s Woman of the Year for 2009 and the Inspiration award for 2017.
“She wants girls to feel they can do anything.” (Rashida Jones)
Founded by Poehler and Meredith Walker, the Smart Girls organization is dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. The organization supports girls and women who are “changing the world by being themselves.”
“We emphasize intelligence and imagination over “fitting in.” We celebrate curiosity over gossip. We are a place where people can truly be their weird and wonderful selves. We are funny first, and informative second, hosting the party you want to attend.”
As Glamour points out, Poehler makes use of her comedy in her mission to empower young women. Kudos to one of the greatest comedians of our time, Amy Poehler!
