Smile of the Week – The Exceptional Lupita Nyongo
Since her award-winning performance in Steve McQueen’s 2013 historical drama, 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyongo has held our attention. The Mexican-Kenyan actress has not simply been making news in the film industry but in the world of fashion as well.
The Breakthrough of Lupita Nyongo
Indeed, the 34-year-old has made a name for herself as a style icon. In 2013, Derek Blasberg included her in the best dressed list in Harper’s Bazaar.
In 2014, she was chosen as one of the faces for Miu Miu’s spring campaign, along with other lovely celebrities, and the new face of Lancôme, making her the first black woman to appear on the beauty brand. Her radiant skin and beautiful smile has also graced numerous magazine covers, including Vogue, Elle (France), New York’s spring fashion issue and the UK magazine Dazed & Confused. That same year, she was named “The Most Beautiful Woman” by People and “Woman of the Year” by Glamour.
In 2015, made her second cover for the American Vogue October issue. That same year, she was honoured with a “Lupita Nyong’o Day” in Harlem, New York, by Congressman Charles Rangel and Voza Rivers, the head of the New Heritage Theatre Group.
Continuing Success and Recognitions
In 2016, Nyong’o was one of the first celebrities, alongside with Elle Fanning, Christy Turlington Burns, and Natalie Westling, chosen to star in Tiffany & Co.’s Fall 2016 campaign. She made her third Vogue cover and was an honoree at the 2016 Elle Women in Hollywood Awards in October of that year. Also during the same month, the Oscar winner attended the 60th BFI London Film Festival in a vibrant ensemble, from her clothes to her accessories and makeup, a look that only she could pull off.
In January 2017, the Mexican-Kenyan actress appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue. Her most recent attendances at the Met Gala and the Cannes Festival are also worth the buzz they are creating.
